French firm updates geostatistical software

GEOVARIANCES has formally launched the updated version of its geostatistical modelling software, Isatis, describing the 2012 version as offering features “long time expected by geostatisticians”.
The first of these is an automatic variogram fitting tool which was “unique in the world of geostatistics software as it is the only one that handles complex variography and allows quick and high-quality fitting of multivariate, multi-directional and multi-structure variograms”, according to Geovariances’ Isatis product manager Laurent Wagner.
“The user has just to select a set of basic combinations of structures and the program is able to compute the best fit of the variogram model against the input experimental variograms.”
He said the algorithm used was based on quadratic optimisation methods. Its strength was that it could identify anisotropies and optimise variogram ranges, sills, and other involved parameters for each basic structure, each simple or cross-variogram, in all directions of the space simultaneously.
“The important benefit of this is that, when combined with Isatis batch procedures, it allows the set-up of efficient automatic estimation workflows using models adjusted at best,” Wagner said. “It makes the update of resource models with new data easy and fast and improves user’s productivity.”
Also new in Isatis 2012 is ‘Flumy’, a geological modeller for sedimentary deposits which uses a combination of process-based and stochastic approaches.
“Flumy originates from the eponym research consortium from the Geostatistics Group from Mines ParisTech. We have entirely re-designed it so that it perfectly fits in Isatis,” said Geovariances R&D manager François Geffroy.
Isatis 2012 could also compute grade tonnage curves from block simulations computed on selective mining units or on panel grids. Existing grade tonnage curves, derived from kriging results, had also been “enriched” with the ability to handle 2D block models with a given thickness (such as stratiform deposits) and irregular block models, Geovariances said.
Isatis is a software package which is used by major mining and petroleum companies to manage multi-million cell grid models.
