Centerra fights attack on Kyrgyz licence

JUNE 25 – Canadian miner Centerra Gold is fighting a bid in the parliament of Kyrgyzstan to strip it of the operating licence for its Kumtor gold mine after a parliamentary report accused the mine of causing substantial environmental challenge.
Centerra, which is 33% owned by Kyrgyz state gold company Kyrgyzaltyn, has been operating the openpit mine since 1997. The mine reportedly generates 12% of Kyrgyzstan’s economy.
As parliament began debating the 800 page report of a parliamentary commission set up to review Kumtor’s compliance with operational, environmental, health and safety and community standards, CEO Ian Atkinson says the company believes after an initial review of the summary conclusions the report's findings are without merit.
Atkinson says the Kumtor project is in full compliance with Kyrgyz laws, meets or exceeds Kyrgyz and international environmental, safety and health standards, and serves as a model for other mining projects in the Kyrgyz Republic and internationally.
