Jobs Board to counter visa attacks

JUNE 12 – The Australian government is attempting to deflect public criticism over relaxed visa conditions for foreign workers in the skills-starved resource industries by establishing an electronic Resources Sector Jobs Board.
The government has come under fire from unions since news emerged of the Enterprise Migration Agreements scheme, which allows employers to import workers on short-term visas where they can demonstrate skills shortages on large resource construction projects.
Companies and contractors seeking to recruit overseas workers through EMAs will be required to advertise positions on the Jobs Board to demonstrate suitably qualified Australians have been given the first opportunity to apply for available jobs.
The Roy Hill project, the first EMA holder, will be required to use the Jobs Board to recruit workers when it commences construction of the mine.
In Australia’s Northern Territory, a special Remote and Regional Workforce Connect has been established to help link indigenous workers with job opportunities in the resource sector.
Workforce Connect initially targets the NT communities at Tiwi Islands, Wadeye, Maningrida, Gunbalanya and Ramingining.
