Miner takes the lead on environmental protection

June 5 – Canadian company Astur Gold Corp is developing one of Western Europe’s largest undeveloped gold resources at its 100%-owned Salave project at Asturias in northern Spain, and it’s determined to do it in an environmentally friendly manner.
The company has formed a partnership with a regional environmental group, the Fund for the Protection of Wild Animals (FAPAS), to develop the mine in a manner that preserves and enhances the environment and biodiversity.
FAPAS president Roberto Hartasánchez says the relationship should serve as a template for future initiatives involving mining companies and environmental organisations. Astur says it’s evaluating agreements with various organisations to supplement the environmental impact study, which is now with the Asturias General Directorate of Mines.
