Kingsgate welcomes Chatree decision
2nd Apr 2012
SYDNEY, Apr 2 – Chatree gold mine owner Kingsgate Consolidated has welcomed the decision by a court in Thailand to dismiss an action over environmental and health issues at the mine.
Kingsgate says the Phitsanulok administrative court in Central Thailand dismissed all complaints by residents against the Industry Department and five government departments. Kingsgate’s Thai subsidiary Akara Mining was not a defendant but an interpleader in the case as it related to the issuing of mining licences to Akara.
The company says court-appointed experts who conducted an extensive investigation and found no evidence of the mine causing environmental or health problems.
However, Kingsgate said Akara would comply with the court order and retrospectively submit an environmental and health impact assessment application in line with post-2010 regulations for the mine, which commenced operations in 2001.
Chairman Ross Smyth-Kirk says the court’s decision to dismiss all complaints is testament to Akara’s strong commitment to the highest standards in environment and public health protection at Chatree. He says the decision does not affect Kingsgate’s operations or production.
