Voyage of discovery
16th Mar 2012
WELLINGTON, Mar 16 – It’s a Pacific cruise with a difference for the good ship Dorado Discovery. The hi-tech research vessel has sailed for the Chatham Rise, 450km east of the New Zealand capital Wellington, where it will spend about a month going back and forth collecting environmental and geotechnical data.
Instead of overweight pensioners or oversexed Gen-Xers, it’s carrying scientists and technicians from government research agencies, Royal Boskalis Westminster, Golder Associates and Kenex.
Chatham Rock Phosphate says the voyage will uncover significant data for an environmental impact report so it can apply for a mining licence this year over rock phosphate deposits lying at shallow depths on the Chatham Rise.
The 4276sq.km exploration licence area is estimated to contain enough rock phosphate to meet NZ market needs for 15 years.
