EXPOS: IN A year of rolling big events – conferences and expos – on the mining calendar, the major mining expo in Queensland is expected to be a sell-out again in 2012.

Paul Baker, head of Queensland Mining & Engineering (QME) exhibition organiser Reed Mining Events, says more than 90% of show space at the Mackay Entertainment & Convention Centre has been booked despite an addition 2500sq.m being added to the 2012 event area. The 2010 expo had more than 550 exhibitors and this year’s show could have up to 650.

Massive investment in new Queensland mines and expansion projects is driving the growth of supply companies and these firms have traditionally used the Mackay expo as a showcase for new products, equipment and technologies. The mining industry is also investing more heavily than in the past on information, communication and automation technologies, and related services, and this is drawing new players into the market.

Held 10 times over the past 20 years, QME is now attracting more than 10,000 visitors and Baker said new Reed initiatives aimed at bringing more people through the gate to its mining events had been successful.

“[We’ve] introduced programs aimed at attracting more women, front-liners – operators, maintenance crews, supervisors and foremen – and community people involved in the mining industry,” he said. “We’ll be building on them for QME 2012.

“We will also be incorporating a recruitment element in QME, aimed at people who are looking to careers in the mining industry. QME 2012 will incorporate the QME Community Hub, which will involve community-based organisations such as the Mater Foundation and Mining Family Matters, around which these programs and initiatives will be based.

Accommodation in and around Mackay is expected to be “very tight” during the QME 2012 week of July 24-26.

“We are working very closely with Mackay Tourism and other regional agencies to maximise the accommodation available – but I would urge anyone looking to attend this event to book their accommodation as soon as possible, and lock this year’s QME dates into their diary,” Baker said.

REEDMININGEVENTS’ portfolio also includes mining expos in Newcastle, Sydney, Kalgoorlie and Perth, Australia.
