People on the move: Continental Coal, A-Cap, Atlas Iron
22 February 2012
SOUTH African mining executive Mike Kilbride is now non-executive chairman of emerging coal producer Continental Coal. A 35-year veteran of the industry, Kilbride is former executive director and chief operating officer of Exxaro Resources, and a former chairman of Sishen Iron Ore Company, Kumba Resources and Exxaro Coal.
Kilbride, 60, was executive director and chief operating officer at Exxaro Resources, South Africa’s largest empowered resource company, before joining Continental.
MINING engineer Paul Thomson has replaced Andrew Tunks as CEO of A-Cap Resources.
Tunks remains a non-executive director and Richard Lockwood has been appointed to the board of the uranium explorer as non-executive director. The company is looking to progress to the development phase at the Letlhakane project in Botswana.
Thomson is said to have more than 35 years of experience in mining and project development in Africa and has been project manager at Letlhakane and with A-Cap for three years. Prior to joining A-Cap, he held senior management positions in the industry, including managing director of African Copper Mining and Exploration Botswana, director and country manager of Corridor Mineral Sands in Mozambique and construction manager of the Golden Pride gold project in Tanzania.
40-year-old David Flanagan is the new chairman of growing Australian iron ore producer Atlas Iron, having led the company as managing director since it began its transition from Pilbara explorer to producer.
Atlas chief development officer Ken Brinsden has become the company’s managing director, and former Western Australian Government agent general and CEO of the Fremantle Port Authority, Kerry Sanderson, has joined the board as an independent non-executive director.
Atlas said the restructure would initially see Flanagan retain a day-to-day role overseeing the company’s growth – assisting Brinsden – with an emphasis on strategic planning and corporate issues. He replaces David Hannon as Atlas chairman. Hannon continues as an independent non-executive director.
Flanagan will remain as executive chairman until August 31, 2012, as part of the hand-over of managing director’s duties to Brinsden. He will then become non-executive chairman.
Brinsden, a mining engineer, has overseen development of Atlas’ current operating mines at Wodgina and Pardoo in WA. He previously worked for WMC Resources, Normandy, GoldFields and Iluka Resources in production, management, brownfields and greenfields mine development roles.
