MICHELIN is making strides to better respond to booming (mining) market demand in several ways. They are:

  • Long-term capacity investments. Our objective is to increase our earthmover tyre production capacity up to 40% by 2010. Our new earthmover tyre plant in Brazil is expected to roll out its first tyre in November 2007 and produce up to 40,000 tonnes of 25-to-49-inch tyres in 2010. We are also increasing our production capacity of large 51-63 inch mining tyres at our earthmover plant in Lexington, South-Carolina, to increase its production by 50%. These and other capital spending programs will allow Michelin to increase its total earthmover tyre production capacity by 26% by year-end 2008 and 40% by 2010.
  • Innovative solutions to optimise earthmover tyre life span. For example, in 2007 the Michelin Earthmover Management System (MEMS) will be available for sale on a large scale. This tyre management solution for surface mining is the first of its kind available on the market. It will enable users to monitor tyre temperature and pressure in real-time, thereby enhancing productivity and improving safety.
  • Excellence of our products and our people. As always, the high performance of our tyres and the expertise and dedication of our people bring added value to our customers.

While supply remains tight for all surface mining tyres and some support equipment tyres, we are working closely with our customers and managing the demand. Sixty-three-inch tyre supply is starting to ramp up from capacity increases announced 12 months ago and we are not aware of any projects being delayed in our zone due to shortage of new 63-inch tyres.
